Four Men Cling to Ski Boat Above 130-Foot Drop in Daring Rescue (Video)

The dramatic footage captures four men desperately clinging to a ski boat as it hovers dangerously above a dam spillway, with rushing water surging beneath them.

The terrifying incident unfolded on Monday on the Vaal River in Standerton, a town in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province. Witnesses reported that the boat had drifted toward the dam wall and became trapped at the spillway, with the men hanging on, trying to prevent it from being swept over the edge.

The men were stranded for several hours, and by the time they were rescued, the sun had long set. Some of them held onto the boat with both hands, while others clung to it with just one hand, struggling to keep it from being swept away by the powerful current.

A multi-agency rescue operation was launched at 7:15 pm, but the ferocity of the water initially prevented rescuers from reaching the men.

As the situation grew more urgent, boats were launched several miles upstream to plan a careful approach. At around 9:40 pm, three sluice gates were opened to divert the water and help stabilize the situation, reducing the risk of the boat being dragged over the 130-foot drop.

The rescue craft finally managed to pull the men clear of the edge, bringing them to safety. Once aboard the rescue boat, they were taken to shore, where paramedics assessed them. Fortunately, all four men were uninjured.

Rescuers later reported that the ski boat likely suffered a mechanical failure, which caused it to drift dangerously close to the spillway. The incident ended without any casualties, but it certainly serves as a reminder of how quickly things can turn dangerous in fast-moving water.
