A child’s birthday party in a quiet Massachusetts town turned deadly Saturday night after gunfire erupted inside a local social club, leaving two people dead and two others wounded.
The shooting happened just after 7 p.m. at Saint John The Baptist, a social club on Silva Street in Carver, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz. Cruz said multiple 911 calls poured in reporting shots fired during what had been a family gathering.
When first responders arrived, they found 27-year-old Benjamin Cowart dead at the scene. A second victim, 20-year-old Jalen Pina, was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries.
Two other men, ages 28 and 32, were also shot and taken to area hospitals. Cruz said both were listed in stable condition as of Saturday night.
Authorities identified the suspect as 22-year-old Nicholas Meuse. Cruz said Meuse fled the scene but was taken into custody a short distance away. He is expected to be arraigned in Wareham District Court on Monday or Tuesday, depending on weather conditions.
Meuse is facing two counts of murder, two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, and several firearm-related charges.
Cruz emphasized that investigators do not believe the shooting was random. According to the district attorney, everyone involved at the party appeared to know one another.
“The people here in the town of Carver should feel safe,” Cruz said. “There is no ongoing threat.”
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not released additional details about what led to the violence.
Carver, a Plymouth County town with a population of just under 12,000, is located about 45 miles south of Boston.
