At least six people needed medical attention after a car crashed into a terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport on Friday night, sending shockwaves through one of the region’s busiest travel hubs.
The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. local time on Jan. 23, when a vehicle drove straight into the entrance of the McNamara Terminal and slammed into a ticket counter, according to a statement from the Wayne County Airport Authority Police Department.
Officials confirmed that six people were treated at the scene. The driver, who has not been publicly identified, was taken into custody. Authorities said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Images from the scene showed police tape cordoning off the damaged terminal entrance as emergency crews worked inside the building.
Local outlet Fox 2 Detroit reported that officials believe the driver may have experienced a mental episode. It remains unclear whether charges will be filed.
Video obtained by Metro Detroit News appears to show a dark-colored Mercedes embedded in a Delta ticket counter, with stunned travelers standing nearby. In other clips circulating online, the driver — wearing what looks like a black Detroit Lions jersey — can be heard shouting incoherently as airport security restrains him.
Additional footage shared by CBS News captured the aftermath inside the terminal, including shattered kiosks and broken entrance doors that firefighters were seen carefully removing from their hinges.
Delta Air Lines told CBS News that no passenger injuries were reported. The airline said three employees were evaluated by emergency personnel after coming into contact with debris, but flights and airport operations were not impacted.
Ali Khalifa, a traveler who witnessed the chaos, told WXYZ-TV that the response from authorities was almost immediate.
“The response was so quick, thank God — with the cops and TSA and everybody,” Khalifa said. “That all happened in seconds.”
