A Maine community is mourning the loss of a high school senior who was killed after a pickup truck was struck by a train Thursday afternoon.

The deadly crash happened around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Elm Street and Buffum Road in North Berwick, according to local reports. Police said a Downeaster train was traveling through the area when it collided with the truck.

North Berwick Police Chief Stephen Peasley said the driver — the only person inside the vehicle — was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was later confirmed to be a senior at Noble High School, though officials have not released the student’s name.

“We were able to identify the person,” Peasley said, calling the situation “a tough time for the community.”

No one aboard the train was injured. An Amtrak spokesperson said all 147 passengers and crew members were unharmed.

Emergency crews began removing the truck from the tracks just after 6 p.m., and the train was stopped for roughly three hours following the crash.

Authorities are continuing to investigate what led the truck onto the tracks. Police say they are still gathering details and working to determine exactly how the collision occurred.

“We’ve got a big investigation ahead of us,” Peasley said.

Amtrak said it is cooperating fully with local law enforcement as the investigation continues.
