Australian authorities are releasing new details about a heartbreaking scene discovered at a home in a leafy suburb of Perth, where a couple, their two teenage sons, and three family pets were all found dead in what police believe was a murder-suicide.
Officers with Western Australia Police were called to a residence in Mosman Park early Friday morning after a family friend arrived at the home and contacted emergency services. Police said that upon entering the house, they found four people and three animals deceased.
Authorities identified the victims as a 50-year-old man, a 49-year-old woman, and two boys aged 14 and 16. One cat and two dogs were also found dead inside the home. Police said all were members of the same family.
Homicide detectives are investigating the case as a suspected murder-suicide. Officials stressed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The family has since been identified by local media as Maiwenna Goasdowe, 49, her husband Jarrod Clune, 50, and their sons Leon, 16, and Otis, 14.
Detective Acting Inspector Jessica Securo told reporters there was no known history of family violence involving the household, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
She also revealed that both teenage boys had significant health challenges and were receiving care for autism, a detail later reported by News.com.au. The caregiver for the boys was the person who discovered the scene after arriving at the home earlier that morning.
According to police, the caregiver found a note taped to the front door that warned, “don’t enter” and instructed them to “call police.”
Detective Securo said investigators are not yet discussing how the family members died but emphasized that there were no signs of a violent struggle.
“What I can advise is that there was no weapon used during this incident,” she said, adding again that police had no previous reports of family violence connected to the household.
In a statement released Friday, Detective Securo described the discovery as devastating.
“This is a tragic and confronting incident where a family has lost their lives, and the impact will be felt across the entire community,” she said. “It was a confronting scene for all first responders.”
Police said health and welfare resources, including chaplain support, have been made available to officers involved in the response. Authorities also urged anyone affected by the news to seek support services if needed.
The investigation remains ongoing as police continue working to understand what led to the deaths.
