A tragic incident inside a Pennsylvania restaurant has left workers and customers shaken after an Olive Garden cook died following what authorities described as a suicide attempt.
The incident happened last Friday afternoon at an Olive Garden location in Williamsport, according to law enforcement and emergency dispatch audio first reported by The Smoking Gun.
Authorities said the employee, who has not been publicly identified, removed his clothing and deliberately thrust his head into a deep fryer filled with extremely hot oil while on the job. In chilling 911 audio, dispatchers can be heard describing the scene as chaotic.
“A male victim went head first into the fryers,” one dispatcher said.
Another operator added, “I don’t have a lot of details — lot of people screaming — some kind of a burn victim.”
Coworkers immediately rushed to intervene. Police said several employees tried desperately to stop the man from further injuring himself. During the struggle, a female employee suffered minor burns. At least one customer inside the restaurant also attempted to help.
The cook was transported to a nearby hospital with catastrophic burn injuries. Authorities later confirmed he died as a result of those injuries.
Both Olive Garden and local officials declined to release further details about what led up to the incident, describing it only as a suicide attempt. No additional information has been shared about the employee or whether any prior warning signs were observed.
The restaurant closed for several days following the incident before reopening.
The tragedy has sparked renewed conversations about mental health support in high-stress service industry environments, where employees often work long hours under intense pressure.
