A disturbing discovery in Mexico is raising eyebrows just months before the country hosts several matches in the upcoming World Cup.

Authorities say more than 500 bags of human remains have been uncovered in and around Guadalajara, located just a few miles from Akron Stadium — one of the venues scheduled to host international games this summer.

Investigators have identified at least 20 suspected clandestine grave sites across the city in Jalisco state. So far, four of those sites have been searched, with hundreds of bags containing human remains already recovered. Officials warn that more could still be found as the investigation continues.

Guadalajara is in a region long associated with the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel, known as CJNG. Violence surged across multiple Mexican states after the reported death of cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, leading to road blockades, burned vehicles and armed clashes in some areas.

The fact that the remains were found near a stadium set to welcome global teams and fans has added to the concern.

A local volunteer group, Guerreros Buscadores de Jalisco, which searches for missing persons, helped locate several of the graves. One member told Spanish media that in Jalisco, people who disappear are often deliberately erased to eliminate evidence of crimes.

In nearby Zapopan, another large property known as Las Agujas previously yielded 270 bags of human remains. Since that discovery, dozens more bags have been recovered in the area.

Some residents near Akron Stadium have questioned whether the timing is right to host a major international event.

“We have so many problems, and they want to invest in the World Cup? With all the violence, it’s not a good idea,” said one local restaurant owner.

Mexican officials, however, insist there is no danger to visitors.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has said there are full guarantees for the safety of fans and tourists. FIFA President Gianni Infantino also expressed confidence that Mexico will successfully and safely host the matches.

Akron Stadium is scheduled to host four World Cup games, including matchups such as Mexico vs. South Korea and Uruguay vs. Spain.

Jalisco Governor Jesus Pablo Lemus said FIFA has no plans to relocate any of Mexico’s venues.

The U.S. State Department currently advises Americans to exercise increased caution in parts of Mexico due to crime and cartel-related activity. Still, millions of U.S. travelers visit the country each year without incident.
