A routine afternoon at one of Australia’s most iconic food markets took a frightening turn when a young man suffered serious hand injuries in a butcher shop accident.
The incident happened around 5 p.m. on Feb. 20 at Marino Meat and Food Store, located inside Adelaide’s historic Central Market. According to local outlets Sky News and 7 News Australia, emergency crews were called after reports that a man had become caught in industrial equipment.
A spokesperson for SA Ambulance Service confirmed paramedics treated a man in his 20s for “significant hand injuries” before transporting him to Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Initial reports indicated the man’s hand had become trapped in machinery. A witness later told Sky News that the injury involved a mince machine, claiming, “Someone put their hand on the mince machine and they were trying to save his hand.”
Emergency responders worked quickly inside the store, which was reportedly covered with curtains to shield the scene as they treated the injured worker. He was later rushed to the hospital for further care. His current condition has not been publicly disclosed.
The family-owned butcher shop remained closed for several hours following the incident.
SafeWork SA, the South Australian government agency responsible for workplace health and safety, confirmed it is investigating.
“Inspectors attended the scene and inquiries are continuing,” a spokesperson said.
