What started as a routine stop at a red light turned into a jaw-dropping rescue — and a college basketball player is now being hailed as a real-life hero.
University of Nebraska-Omaha women’s basketball player Olivia Borsutzki has been identified as the good samaritan who jumped into action after a massive sinkhole suddenly swallowed two vehicles at a city intersection.
Borsutzki was sitting at a red light with teammate Esra Kurban when the ground reportedly gave way beneath an SUV and a pickup truck. Both vehicles were pulled into the earth as stunned drivers nearby watched in disbelief.
The drivers tried to escape, but the man in the SUV struggled to climb out of the deep hole.
That’s when Borsutzki made a split-second decision.
Video from the scene shows her steering around cars waiting to turn, pulling onto the sidewalk, and jumping out of her vehicle. She ran straight toward the crater and was the first person to physically try to pull the trapped driver to safety. Moments later, Kurban followed her out of the passenger seat to help.

Speaking afterward, Borsutzki said she was shocked by what she saw around her.
“There were cars driving past and everyone had their cell phones out,” she said. “Men and women were just recording. Nobody was helping.”
She and Kurban initially thought other adults would step in.
“We thought grown men were going to stop and help,” they said. “But no one did. So we left the car.”
At one point, another man joined the rescue effort — but only after Borsutzki reportedly told him directly, “I need your help — come pull this guy out with me.”
City officials later said the sinkhole was likely caused by a water main break. The collapse left a massive crater estimated to be between 30 and 50 feet wide and up to 15 feet deep.
As footage of the dramatic rescue spread online, teammates, coaches, and family quickly recognized the two athletes.
Borsutzki’s strength coach even texted her afterward with a proud message: “Very strong, big dog.”
The 5-foot-11 junior guard from Germany is in her first season at Omaha after transferring from Xavier. She has not yet appeared in a game this season. Kurban, a freshman from Turkey, has played in 19 games and scored 14 points so far.
But on this day, stats didn’t matter.

Hate it when that happens… fortunately a shallow sinkhole… some of them happening around here… a much deeper one almost got me…
