Passengers on a United Airlines flight bound for Newark faced a terrifying midair scare Monday when an engine fire alarm forced pilots to turn the plane around just minutes after takeoff from Los Angeles International Airport.
United Flight 2127 departed LAX but returned around 11:20 a.m. local time after pilots shut down one of the aircraft’s two engines following a fire warning.
“We’re getting fire indications still, so we are going to need to evacuate,” one pilot told airport firefighters over radio transmissions captured by LiveATC.net.
The aircraft, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, was carrying 256 passengers and 12 crew members at the time.
After landing safely, the plane stopped on a taxiway just off the runway. Passengers were quickly evacuated using emergency slides and mobile stairs, pouring onto the tarmac as other aircraft sat nearby.

“People are going to be coming out the right side, the side toward the runway. We would prefer to stay right here and just get people off,” another pilot told emergency crews. He later added that a second fire indication had appeared, again pointing to the left engine.
According to the cockpit communications, the crew deployed both built-in fire extinguishers in the affected engine, but warning alerts continued.
Video captured by a passenger shows flight attendants urgently directing travelers down the slides.
“Come this way! Jump and slide!” one attendant shouted. “Get away from the plane! Leave all bags behind!”
Despite the alarming situation, no injuries were reported. United confirmed that passengers were bused back to the terminal, and a replacement aircraft was arranged to continue the trip to Newark.
The incident temporarily shut down one runway at LAX and caused delays for incoming flights, airport officials said.
The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into what triggered the fire warning.
