Mirra Andreeva’s Indian Wells title defense ended in total chaos — and it happened fast.

The 18-year-old defending champion unraveled during a third-round loss to unseeded Katerina Siniakova on Monday night, falling 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 in a match that turned tense, then ugly.

It started boiling over after Andreeva took the first set. Siniakova complained to the chair umpire about how quickly Andreeva was serving, and the umpire told the teen to slow down between points. Andreeva argued back, insisting her serve rhythm was her choice.

By the second set, the frustration was written all over her body language. Commentators noted she was visibly angry with herself, including repeatedly striking her thigh after missed chances.

Then came the blow-up. After dropping the second-set tiebreak, Andreeva launched her racket, slammed it repeatedly, and picked up a code violation.

She didn’t calm down from there. After match point, she threw the racket again, gave Siniakova a quick handshake, and stormed off while gesturing at the stands and shouting an expletive-laced message at the crowd as boos rained down.

Andreeva admitted afterward she wasn’t proud of how she handled herself — and said it’s something she needs to fix “soon,” not someday.

The moment is especially jarring because Andreeva is still seen as one of tennis’ brightest young stars. She’s already made deep Slam runs, including a semifinal at Roland Garros in 2024, and her rise has been one of the most talked-about storylines on tour.

  1. Seriously poor sportsmanship grow up! Athletes these days simply can’t master being a good loser as much as a winner just pathetic.
