A frightening situation unfolded at Disneyland on Tuesday after several employees were exposed to hazardous materials near one of the park’s most popular attractions.

The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. in a backstage area near the Star Tours ride in Tomorrowland at the Anaheim, California theme park. According to the Anaheim Police Department, firefighters were called to the scene after workers reported a strange odor coming from the area.

Officials later determined the smell was linked to materials being used by building contractors working nearby.

Several Disneyland cast members began feeling ill and were treated by paramedics at the scene. Park officials said some employees experienced dizziness and shortness of breath.

Seven workers were ultimately taken to nearby hospitals for further evaluation.

As a precaution, Disney temporarily closed and cleared nearby guest areas while emergency crews investigated the source of the odor. Authorities later said there was no danger to park visitors.

The affected areas were expected to reopen once officials determined it was safe to do so.

The Star Tours attraction, located in Tomorrowland, is a motion-simulator ride inspired by the Star Wars franchise. It first opened at Disneyland in 1987 and was updated in 2011 to feature scenes and characters from newer Star Wars films and shows.

Investigators continue to review what caused the exposure, though officials say contractor materials appear to be responsible.
