A school bus carrying 42 students veered off the road and crashed into a mobile home in South Carolina, sending nearly 20 people to the hospital.
The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, in Orangeburg, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
Officials said the 2023 Thomas school bus was traveling west on Shillings Bridge Road and attempting to turn left onto Mill Branch Road when it ran off the roadway.
The bus then struck a home.
There were 42 students from Clark Middle School and Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School on board at the time, according to the Orangeburg County School District.
The house was empty when the crash happened.
Eighteen students and the bus driver were taken to a hospital for evaluation, according to local reports.
All were later released to their parents or guardians.
The remaining students were evaluated at school.
Officials have not publicly detailed the extent of the injuries.
The bus driver has been placed on administrative leave while authorities investigate what caused the crash.
“The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority,” the Orangeburg County School District said.
The district said it followed established emergency procedures and would continue cooperating with law enforcement.
Officials also thanked first responders, medical teams and school staff who rushed to help.
“We are grateful to the first responders, law enforcement personnel, medical professionals, and district staff who responded quickly and assisted our students and driver,” the district said.
One student who witnessed the crash said the scene left him shaken.
Sophomore Victor Olivos told WLTX he had been waiting outside his home for his own bus when he saw what happened.
He said he was relieved he had not been aboard the bus involved but admitted the crash would stay with him.
“I’m going to be paranoid that’s for sure,” Olivos said.
He added that the crash would likely be “in the back of my mind every time I’m on a bus.”
