A scenic trip through the Andes turned into a nightmare after a tourist bus plunged off a mountain road in Peru, leaving at least nine people dead and dozens more injured.
The devastating crash happened Sunday, March 22, along a remote route to Marcapomacocha — about nine miles from Rajuntay, a towering peak in the Andes Mountains.
According to the Fire Company of La Oroya, the bus overturned in the mountainous terrain while carrying around 25 tourists and tour guides.
When emergency crews arrived, the scene was chaotic.
Responders immediately began triaging victims based on the severity of their injuries, rushing the most critical cases to nearby hospitals.
Fifteen people were injured in the crash, officials confirmed. Seven victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others later died after being transported to medical facilities.
Emergency teams deployed multiple ambulances to evacuate survivors, with the most serious cases taken to Hospital of Matucana and others treated at smaller local clinics with help from Peru’s National Police.
Photos from the scene show the bus flipped upside down near the mountainside, surrounded by rescue crews working against time in the high-altitude terrain.
The crash took place in the Yauli province in Peru’s Junín region — an area known for its steep roads and extreme elevations, rising more than 5,000 meters above sea level.
Peru’s Ministry of Health confirmed that emergency response teams were activated immediately and continue to provide care for the injured while coordinating with other authorities.
In a statement, officials expressed their condolences to the victims’ families, calling the incident a “tragic traffic accident” that has shaken the region.
An investigation into what caused the bus to veer off the road is now underway.
