Teen Girl Killed by Garbage Truck While Crossing Street

A 19-year-old girl was killed in a horrifying late-night crash in Queens, NY after a garbage truck struck her while she was in the crosswalk, police said.

The victim was identified as Nishath Jannath. According to authorities, she was crossing 62nd Street at Roosevelt Avenue in Woodside around 11:55 p.m. Sunday when she was hit by a sanitation truck operated by Royal Waste Services.

Investigators said the truck was traveling west on Roosevelt Avenue and was making a right turn onto the northbound side of 62nd Street when it struck Jannath on the north side of the intersection. Police said she was in the crosswalk at the time of the collision.

EMS responded to the scene, but Jannath was pronounced dead there.

The driver of the sanitation truck, a 38-year-old woman, stayed at the scene after the crash. She was treated for minor injuries, according to police.

So far, no arrests have been made. The NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is continuing to investigate exactly what happened.

Royal Waste, which is based in Jamaica, Queens, and describes itself as a leading recycling company in the city, did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
