Couple Driving Home from Shopping Trip Rescue Mom and Her Baby from Terrifying House Fire

An Indiana couple is being praised as heroes after they spotted a house fire at exactly the right moment and rushed in to save a mother and her baby.

Matt and Erin Wuestefeld of Greendale were simply driving home from Lowe’s on March 15 when a routine errand suddenly turned into a life-saving rescue.

According to local outlet WKRC, the couple noticed something was wrong as they passed a white two-story home.

“We both smelled smoke,” Matt said. “We looked over to the left and saw some flames coming out below the window.”

That is when Matt acted fast.

He turned the car around, jumped out, and ran straight to the house. After rushing to the front door and knocking, he found a young mother inside with a baby who was less than a year old.

Matt said he immediately told her the house was on fire and helped get both her and the baby safely outside.

But he did not stop there.

After getting them out, Matt ran back inside the burning home to grab the woman’s keys, her purse, the baby carrier, and a bottle. He also helped move the car and made sure nearby fire hydrants were accessible so firefighters could get to work as quickly as possible.

“There’s people who needed help and we were there ready to help,” he said.

The timing could not have been more critical.

The mother, whose name has not been publicly released, later thanked Matt and Erin and said she had just woken up from a nap only seconds before Matt knocked on the door.

That means if the couple had driven by just a little earlier, they may not have noticed anything at all. And if they had come along later, the outcome could have been far worse.

“If we were probably 10 minutes earlier, we’d be not even smelling or seeing it, but there was just the right time to see the smoke and see the flames coming out underneath the window,” Matt said.

Thankfully, the woman and her baby made it out safely.

Still, the fire reportedly destroyed everything they had.

The Greendale Police Department later called it an “extremely dangerous situation” in a Facebook statement, making it clear just how serious the fire was.

For one Indiana family, a normal trip home from the store ended up becoming the reason they are still alive.
