A terrifying bus crash in a popular vacation destination turned deadly after a coach packed with tourists veered off a winding mountain road and overturned.
The accident happened near San Sebastián de La Gomera on the Spanish island of La Gomera as travelers were heading to the airport at the end of their holiday.
Authorities say a 77-year-old man was killed in the crash, while at least 27 others were injured — including three people who suffered serious injuries.
According to local reports, all of the passengers on board were British tourists wrapping up their Easter break.
The driver told police the bus lost its brakes while traveling downhill on a steep stretch of road. In a desperate attempt to avoid disaster, he reportedly tried to steer the vehicle onto a dirt path — but lost control.
The bus then veered off a narrow mountain road at a sharp hairpin turn and tumbled onto rocky terrain below.
Footage from the scene shows the coach lying on its side several yards from the roadway, as emergency crews rushed in to help.
Multiple ambulances and medical teams responded, treating injured passengers at the scene before transporting them to nearby hospitals.
A spokesperson for Holiday Property Bond, the travel group connected to the passengers, confirmed the bus was taking guests to the airport to return home when the crash happened.
“Our immediate focus is on the safety and wellbeing of everyone affected,” the company said in a statement. “This is an extremely distressing situation for those involved and their families.”
The crash has also raised fresh concerns about the dangerous mountain roads in the area. Some tourists familiar with the route say driving there can feel extremely risky due to the steep drops and tight turns.
Officials have launched an investigation into the crash, including whether mechanical failure played a role.
The region, known for its dramatic cliffs, winding roads, and scenic views, has seen similar tragedies before. A deadly bus accident occurred near the same area just last year.
Local leaders, including Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo, expressed condolences to the victims and their families as the investigation continues.
