Bonnie Tyler is still hospitalized in Portugal after a serious medical emergency that left her needing intestinal surgery and placed in a coma earlier this year.

The 75-year-old pop-rock singer, best known for her massive hits “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero,” is now out of the coma, according to a new update from her family and team. But they say she remains very unwell and is still receiving care in an intensive care unit.

A statement posted to Tyler’s official website said her recovery is moving in the right direction, though it will take time.

“Bonnie is no longer in a coma but remains very unwell and in intensive care in hospital in Portugal,” the statement read. “Although her condition is improving it is a slow process. Her doctors remain confident that she will make a good recovery but it is going to take time.”

Tyler’s representatives said the singer’s concerts through August have been canceled because of her condition. However, they said they are still hopeful that her planned fall concerts will be able to go ahead.

The Welsh singer had emergency intestinal surgery in May before being placed into a coma, according to the update. Since then, fans around the world have been sending prayers and messages of support.

Her team said Tyler is aware of the outpouring of love and is grateful for it.

“We would like to thank everyone for the huge outpouring of love and support from all over the world that we have received for Bonnie and want to tell you that she is aware of, and very grateful for, your good wishes,” the statement said.

Her family also asked for continued privacy as she recovers.

“Bonnie’s family continue to ask for privacy and promise that we will issue further updates as soon as there are significant developments to share,” the statement continued.

Tyler has spent decades in the spotlight with her unmistakable raspy voice and dramatic power ballads. “Total Eclipse of the Heart” became one of the defining pop songs of the 1980s, while “Holding Out for a Hero” remains a fan favorite across generations.

For now, her fans are waiting anxiously for more updates as the beloved singer continues her slow recovery in Portugal.
