A horrifying scene unfolded in northern India after a dangerously overcrowded boat carrying tourists suddenly capsized, leaving at least 10 people dead and others fighting for their lives — while the man in charge reportedly fled the scene.

The tragedy struck Friday, April 10, on the Yamuna River near Vrindavan, a popular pilgrimage destination. According to early reports, the privately operated vessel slammed into a pontoon bridge before flipping over, throwing passengers into the water.

What’s even more alarming? The boat was allegedly carrying far more people than it was built for.

Officials say the vessel had a maximum capacity of around 15 passengers — but may have been packed with anywhere from 25 to over 30 people when disaster hit.

Authorities believe strong winds may have caused the boat to sway moments before the collision, setting off the deadly chain of events.

As panic spread across the river, chaos erupted.

Rescue crews rushed to the scene, launching a massive search effort that has since turned into a race against time. More than 120 divers have been deployed, scouring over 8 miles of water for victims.

So far, 22 people have been located — but officials warn the total number of passengers is still unclear, raising fears that more bodies could be found.

“We’re still working to confirm exactly how many people were on board,” Mathura Superintendent of Police Suresh Chandra Rawat said, noting that some victims were taken to multiple hospitals, complicating the count.

Disturbingly, many of those onboard were not wearing life jackets — and early reports suggest the boat may have been poorly maintained.

All of the victims were Indian nationals, including six women. The group was part of a larger турист outing of roughly 150 people visiting the region.

And in a shocking twist, authorities say the boat’s operator fled immediately after the crash — leaving behind a trail of devastation and unanswered questions.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to the tragedy, saying he was “deeply pained” by the loss of life and offering condolences to grieving families.

Officials have announced financial compensation for victims’ families, as rescue operations continue and investigators work to determine how such a deadly failure could happen.

For now, the river remains a grim search zone — and for many families, the nightmare is far from over.
