A terrifying scene unfolded outside a Walmart in Omaha, Nebraska after police say a woman kidnapped a young child inside the store and attacked him with a knife—forcing officers to make a split-second decision.
According to Omaha police, the suspect approached a woman shopping with a 3-year-old boy, pulled out a large knife she had allegedly taken from inside the store, and took control of the child.
Authorities say she forced the woman to walk ahead of a shopping cart while holding the boy at knifepoint, effectively leading them out of the store without raising suspicion. Surveillance suggests the situation looked so casual that other shoppers didn’t realize anything was wrong.
Once outside, the situation escalated.
Police say the two women exchanged words for several minutes in the parking lot area before officers arrived in response to a 911 call. When officers confronted the suspect and issued commands, things took a violent turn.
“She began swiping the knife at the child, cutting him across the face,” Deputy Chief Scott Gray said.
At that point, at least one officer opened fire, striking the suspect. She died at the scene.
Body camera footage released by police shows the intense moment—an officer aiming his weapon as the woman raises a knife over the young boy, who was sitting in a shopping cart.
The child suffered a deep cut to the side of his face and an injury to his hand but is expected to survive, according to authorities.
Investigators say the suspect and the woman with the child did not know each other, and it’s still unclear what led to the attack. Police are continuing to review store surveillance and piece together exactly what happened.

Officials described the incident as isolated, but the shocking nature of the attack has left many shaken.
The officer-involved shooting is now under investigation, with assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol and the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office.
