A frightening situation at sea has turned into an ongoing search effort after a cruise passenger reportedly went overboard.

Authorities are still searching for a man in his 70s who is believed to have jumped from the Carnival Splendor over the weekend while it was sailing off the coast of Australia.

According to a statement from Carnival Cruise Line, the incident happened on Friday, April 17. The man, who was traveling with family, “apparently climbed over the safety railing and jumped,” the company said. His relatives alerted crew members when they realized he was missing, and a review of onboard CCTV footage confirmed what happened.

At the time, the ship was traveling from Moreton Island toward Sydney as part of a four-day round-trip cruise scheduled to return on April 19.

Following the report, an urgent and large-scale search operation was launched.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority confirmed it deployed an “intensive air and sea search,” bringing in major resources to try to locate the missing passenger. That included Challenger jets from Cairns and Melbourne, five rescue helicopters from around the Brisbane area, and six vessels in the water. The Queensland Police Service has also been assisting in the operation.

Despite the massive effort, search crews were unable to locate the man, and operations were paused Saturday evening. As of Monday, April 20, police confirmed the search is still ongoing.

Passengers on board described seeing rescue helicopters scanning the water as the ship remained near Moreton Island for hours. Eventually, the captain informed guests the ship would leave the area Sunday afternoon and continue on to Sydney, where it was expected to arrive around 6 p.m.

The situation also impacted future voyages, with Carnival notifying incoming passengers that boarding for the next cruise departing April 19 would be delayed.

In the meantime, Carnival says its Care Team is supporting the man’s family during the heartbreaking ordeal.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved one,” the company said.
