A trip to the “Most Magical Place on Earth” is now at the center of a messy legal battle.
A tourist is suing Walt Disney Parks and Resorts after claiming a stay at one of its hotels left him with lasting injuries from an alleged bed bug infestation.
According to a lawsuit filed March 31 in Florida’s Orange County Circuit Court, David Besse says he was staying at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort on May 15, 2022, when he was “bitten numerous times” by bed bugs. The resort is one of Disney World’s more affordable “Value Resort” options and is located near Animal Kingdom.
In the complaint, Besse accuses Disney of negligence, claiming the hotel failed to properly maintain safe conditions for guests. He alleges staff were not adequately trained to inspect rooms and that the property failed to use preventative measures like insecticidal dust, mattress liners, and protective encasements.
Besse says the incident left him with serious and lasting effects, including scarring, bodily injury, pain and suffering, disability, and mental anguish. He also claims financial losses tied to medical expenses, lost earnings, and damage to personal property — though the lawsuit does not specify exact amounts.
The suit is seeking more than $50,000 in damages and is requesting a jury trial.
So far, neither Disney nor Besse’s attorney has publicly responded to the claims.
For context, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies bed bugs as a “public health pest.” While they don’t typically spread disease, they can cause significant discomfort, allergic reactions, and ongoing stress for those affected.
The agency recommends travelers inspect hotel rooms before settling in — especially mattresses, headboards, and luggage racks — and to keep suitcases off beds and floors. It also advises washing and drying clothes at high heat after traveling, as heat is one of the most effective ways to kill bed bugs.
