What started as a casual neighborhood soccer game in Michigan turned into a horrifying scene of violence after police say an 18-year-old man opened fire on a group of kids when he was told he couldn’t join the game.
The deadly shooting happened Tuesday evening near Southwest Elementary School in Grand Rapids.
According to police, several children and teenagers were playing soccer when the suspect approached the group and asked if he could participate.
For reasons still unclear, the group turned him away.
Authorities say the rejection quickly escalated into a verbal argument before the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and opened fire.
Police said a 15-year-old boy was shot and killed during the confrontation.
An adult woman who reportedly tried to step in and help the teen was also shot and killed after becoming involved in the argument, investigators said.
Interim Grand Rapids Police Chief Joe Trigg described the tragedy as especially disturbing because so many young people witnessed the killings.
“There was at least seven or eight kids out here that witnessed this,” Trigg said. “Which is just horrific for anybody to witness, let alone juveniles.”
Authorities said the suspect fled the scene after the shooting but was later captured and arrested by police.
Investigators have not yet publicly released the names of the victims or the suspect.
The heartbreaking violence shook the entire neighborhood and prompted the Grand Rapids school district to close two nearby schools Wednesday so students and families could process the tragedy.
School officials said the closures were necessary because of the emotional impact the shooting had on the community.
Residents gathered near the scene Wednesday, struggling to understand how a simple soccer game ended in bloodshed.
“It’s just hard,” local resident Donny Irving told reporters while visiting the memorial site.
“Everyone knows a youth and people who go to playgrounds who play, school students, and I think the whole community feels the loss.”
Police continue investigating the shooting.
