A terrifying day on the water turned into chaos Saturday after a possible boat explosion near one of Florida’s most popular boating hotspots left at least 15 people injured, including at least one child.
The frightening incident happened around 12:30 p.m. near Haulover Sandbar, a well-known party destination packed with boaters and tourists on weekends.
According to reports, emergency crews from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue rushed to the scene after receiving reports of an explosion aboard a boat in the area.
Officials said at least 25 rescue units responded as first responders scrambled to treat victims and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
Authorities confirmed that at least 15 people were hurt in the blast, though officials have not yet released the full extent of the injuries.
The ages of the victims also remain unclear, but local reports say at least one child was among those injured.
Witnesses described a horrifying scene as smoke and panic erupted across the crowded boating area.
One boat captain told local station WPLG that he believes the explosion may have been caused by a gas leak.
According to the captain, the blast happened when the boat was being started.
He described it as the “scariest moment” of his life.
Officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the explosion, and investigators are continuing to examine the scene.
The Haulover Sandbar, located off the coast of North Miami, is known as one of South Florida’s busiest boating destinations, drawing large crowds for parties, swimming, and weekend gatherings.
Videos and photos from the aftermath showed emergency crews surrounding damaged boats while stunned beachgoers watched from nearby vessels.
Authorities are expected to release more information as the investigation continues.
