A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Canada on Mother’s Day after a toddler died following a fall from a high-rise apartment building in Toronto.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene around 12:20 p.m. on May 10 after receiving reports that a young child had fallen from a residential tower near Don Mills Road and Graydon Hall Drive in North York, a district within Toronto, Ontario.
According to local reports, the toddler was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed which floor the child fell from, but neighbors told local media the toddler may have fallen from the 19th floor of the building.
Witnesses described a devastating scene outside the apartment complex, where pink flip-flops were reportedly visible inside the taped-off investigation area.
Residents in the building said the tragedy has left the entire community shaken.
One neighbor told CityNews the child’s family had only recently moved into the apartment building.
“My heart dropped,” the resident said after learning what happened.
“The family, the kids, they were so nice. Every time we’d see them in the elevator, the little girl, she would wave and laugh at us. So heartbreaking.”
Police have not released additional details about the incident and said the investigation remains ongoing.
“We are not releasing additional information about this incident at this time,” a spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service said.
As the community mourned, one nearby resident decided to leave behind a touching memorial for the child.
According to the Toronto Star, longtime area resident Darlene Durette placed a Mickey Mouse toy near the scene along with a handwritten note that read, “Rest in peace, little one.”
“When I found out it was a child, it just broke my heart,” Durette said.
“I had to do something. I’m a mother.”
