The NBA world is in shock after Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke reportedly died suddenly Monday at just 29 years old.

The Grizzlies confirmed Clarke’s death in a heartbreaking statement, though the organization has not yet released details about what happened.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke,” the team said. “Brandon was an outstanding teammate and even better person whose impact on the organization and great Memphis community will not be forgotten.”

“We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Clarke’s sudden death comes only one month after the Grizzlies failed to make the NBA postseason.

The talented forward had spent the past seven-plus seasons in Memphis after entering the league as a first-round draft pick in 2019.

Originally selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder out of Gonzaga, Clarke was quickly traded to the Grizzlies, where he became a fan favorite thanks to his hustle, athleticism, and relentless energy on the court.

The NBA also released a statement mourning Clarke’s death.

“As one of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit,” the league said.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with Brandon’s family, friends and the Grizzlies organization.”

Clarke made an immediate impact during his rookie season in 2019-20, averaging 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds while helping Memphis remain competitive during the pandemic-shortened year.

His strong play earned him a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Team and a fourth-place finish in Rookie of the Year voting.

Over the course of his career, Clarke appeared in 309 NBA games and became known as a key contributor off the bench for Memphis.

The Vancouver native signed a four-year, $52 million contract extension with the Grizzlies in 2022, but injuries later slowed his career dramatically.

In March 2023, Clarke suffered a devastating torn Achilles tendon injury that sidelined him for most of the following season.

He later battled calf and knee injuries and played in only two games this past season.

Last month, Clarke also made headlines after being arrested in Arkansas following allegations that he led police on a high-speed chase. Authorities reportedly charged him with possession and trafficking of a controlled substance as well as fleeing law enforcement.

Now, fans across the NBA are mourning the sudden loss of a player many considered one of the league’s most respected teammates and hardest workers.
