A terrifying tragedy unfolded in Midtown Manhattan after a woman stepped out of her parked SUV and plunged into an uncovered manhole late Monday night, police said.
The 56-year-old woman from Westchester County had reportedly just gotten out of her Mercedes-Benz SUV around 11:20 p.m. near East 52nd Street and Fifth Avenue, close to the Cartier and Nike stores.
Moments later, she fell about 10 feet into an open Con Edison utility hole.
First responders rushed to the scene and found the woman unconscious and unresponsive inside the manhole, according to police.
She was pulled from the opening and taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries.
Authorities have not yet released the woman’s name as they work to notify her family.
Con Edison said it is investigating how the deadly incident happened and why the manhole was left uncovered in one of the busiest shopping areas in Manhattan.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a member of the public has died after falling into an open manhole,” a Con Edison spokesperson told The Post.
The company said it is actively investigating the circumstances behind the tragedy.
“Our thoughts are with the individual’s family, and safety remains our top priority,” the spokesperson added.
Crews were later seen repairing the manhole cover at the scene.
The medical examiner will determine the woman’s official cause of death, police said.
What began as a routine moment stepping out of a car ended in a horrifying accident on one of New York City’s most recognizable streets.
