A British tourist has died after falling from a popular scenic lookout in Spain, according to multiple reports.
The 38-year-old man was found Friday, May 15, near the Mount Urgull area in San Sebastian, a scenic destination known for its dramatic coastal views and busy walking routes.
According to local outlet El Diario Vasco, the man’s body was discovered by a passerby around midday on the Paseo Nuevo coastal walkway. Authorities believe he fell at about 11 a.m. local time.
Officials with the Basque Government’s Department of Security reportedly said the fall was “considerable” and that the man died instantly.
Witnesses described a heavy emergency response in the area after the tragedy.
One local hotel waiter reportedly said he saw Basque police at the scene. Another said a colleague spotted a fire truck with its ladder extended as crews worked to recover the body.
The man’s remains were later taken to the Basque Institute of Legal Medicine for an autopsy, according to The Independent.
Mount Urgull is one of San Sebastian’s best-known attractions, drawing tourists with sweeping views of the city, coastline, and nearby landmarks. The Paseo Nuevo route is also popular with walkers and climbers heading toward the mountain.
But the area has seen deadly incidents before.
El Diario Vasco reported that in 2013, a 20-year-old man died after a rockfall from the slope of Mount Urgull. In 2018, a 16-year-old boy was seriously injured in a fall on the mountain. Then, in 2019, a woman died after falling from Mount Urgull onto the Paseo Nuevo promenade.
Authorities have not publicly released the tourist’s name.
