A terrifying crash in Massachusetts sent 10 students to the hospital after a BMW slammed into the back of a school bus carrying elementary and middle school children.

The crash happened Thursday, May 21, in Everett, Massachusetts, according to CBS News.

Officials said the school bus was carrying 11 students at the time, along with the driver and a supervising monitor. The children on board were elementary and middle school students.

The frightening collision happened when a BMW rear-ended the bus.

Everett Public Schools Superintendent Bill Hart said the bus was not at fault.

“The bus was making a left-hand turn from Broadway into Langdon Street,” Hart explained.

He said the bus appeared to be moving legally and following the rules of the road when the BMW came up from the right-hand side and hit the back end of it.

“It was legal, it was correct, it was observing all — from what I could see — all appropriate signage,” Hart said.

Nine students were taken to the hospital for checkups after the crash. A tenth child was later brought to the hospital by a parent.

Thankfully, officials said no major injuries were reported. Everyone hurt in the crash is expected to be okay.

Still, the accident was a scary reminder of how quickly a normal ride home from school can turn into a nightmare for children and parents.

The Everett crash comes just days after another school bus collision in New York, where police said a distracted driver on his phone caused a frightening wreck near a student’s home.

In that case, high school senior Jeremiah Rutkowski was walking toward the bus when a speeding pickup truck came barreling toward it.

Rutkowski said he had to jump out of the way.

“I just figured, like, if that thing’s not going to stop, it’s either going to hit the bus and something’s coming flying at me, or the entire truck is coming flying at me,” he recalled.

Six children were injured in that crash.

New York State Police later arrested 35-year-old Joshua Smith. Authorities said the investigating trooper determined Smith was following too closely and was distracted while driving. He was later issued traffic tickets for distracted driving, according to WKTV News 2.

The back-to-back crashes have left parents shaken and raised fresh concerns about school bus safety.

In Everett, the outcome could have been much worse. Ten students were checked at the hospital, but everyone is expected to recover.
