What should have been one of the proudest nights of the year at a Tennessee high school turned into a shocking scene of chaos after multiple fights broke out during a graduation ceremony.
The brawls happened on May 14 at Ripley High School, according to the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office.
Instead of families cheering as students celebrated years of hard work, the ceremony reportedly spiraled into a messy scene with chairs scattered across the gym and stunned witnesses watching as fights broke out.
Authorities later announced that 11 people had been charged in connection with the incident. The group included seven men, one woman, and three juveniles.
Officials said most of the suspects turned themselves in after the brawl.
The sheriff’s office did not hide its frustration.
“Tonight should have been one of the proudest moments in the lives of many young men and women in our community,” officials wrote in a stern Facebook statement after the incident.
“Instead, what should have been a celebration of hard work, dedication, and achievement at Ripley High School was disrupted by the selfish and disgraceful actions of a group of individuals who chose to engage in multiple fights during the graduation ceremony.”
The sheriff’s office said the students had worked for years to earn their diplomas, while their families showed up to witness a major milestone.
Instead, officials said, a handful of people ruined the moment.

“It is a shame that a handful of cowardly individuals chose to rob them of a moment they had earned through years of effort and perseverance,” authorities said.
A strict 10 p.m. curfew was enforced the night of the incident.
Video from inside the ceremony reportedly showed a chaotic scene inside the school gym. Chairs were scattered around the floor, and both family members and students appeared to be involved in the commotion.
At one point, the person recording could be heard saying, “You can’t even have a f—— graduation.”
However, school superintendent Selina Sparkman made it clear that she did not want the students blamed for what happened.
“I don’t want to be mistaken and for anybody to think that our children did this,” Sparkman said.
“Once again, they did an amazing job.”
According to the sheriff’s office, those arrested included Kenteavious Washington, Charlie Rogers, Nygel Lattimore, Damien Lattimore, Za’Darius Smith, Jordan Bonds, and Devontae Robertson. They were each charged with inciting a riot and disorderly conduct.
Stephanie Scott was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Three juveniles were also charged. One juvenile, identified only as K.M., was charged with inciting a riot, disorderly conduct, and criminal trespass. Two other juveniles, identified as D.J. and Z.S., were charged with inciting a riot and disorderly conduct.
After the arrests, the sheriff’s office issued a message directly to the graduates and their families.
“To the graduates and their families, we cannot restore the moment that was taken from you, but we can assure you that those responsible have been held accountable,” officials wrote.
“My sincere hope is that our efforts provide some sense of closure and a clear message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated in Lauderdale County.”
