Vladimir Putin has spent years railing against the West, NATO and so-called foreign influence.
But behind the walls of one of his most heavily guarded residences, his alleged young sons are reportedly being raised with help from Western nannies and tutors.
A new investigation by Systema, the Russian investigative unit of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, claims at least 20 foreign citizens have been hired over the past eight years to help care for and educate two boys believed to be Putin’s children with former Olympic gymnast Alina Kabaeva.
The Kremlin has never publicly confirmed the boys’ existence. Putin has only acknowledged two adult daughters from his first marriage, Maria Vorontsova and Katerina Tikhonova.
Investigative outlets have reported that the two younger boys are named Ivan and Vladimir Jr., born in 2015 and 2019. The Dossier Center previously reported that they live highly isolated lives at Putin-linked residences, surrounded by guards, nannies, governesses and private instructors.
The new Systema report adds another layer to that secret world.
According to the investigation, many of the foreign employees hired to care for the boys came from Western countries, including NATO nations. That includes countries Putin has publicly accused of trying to weaken or destroy Russia.
The children reportedly live much of the time at a heavily guarded family compound in Valdai, northwest of Moscow. RFE/RL has previously reported that air-defense systems have been installed around the area, with some reports counting dozens of defensive installations near the residence.
The nannies and tutors were reportedly kept under strict rules.
Systema said employees had to pass medical exams, avoid strong perfume and keep the entire arrangement secret. They were allegedly never told directly that they were working for the Russian president. Officially, some were listed as translators for a Russian company.
The working environment was reportedly tightly controlled. One nanny described the setup as living under “quarantine conditions,” with employees unable to leave the compound on their own. Another British English teacher reportedly asked for unpaid leave because of burnout from the restrictions.
The report also described unusually strict hygiene rules. Nannies were allegedly scolded for walking barefoot because it was considered unhygienic, and one incident reportedly triggered a full investigation into whether an employee was following proper cleanliness rules.
The staff also had to produce detailed daily reports on the boys’ activities, including photos and illustrations.
One of the strangest details involved rules for how the children were to be spoken to during play and education.
According to the report, one contract instructed an employee that since the child was a boy, he should only be given male names and male roles in role-playing games. The same instructions allegedly warned staff not to discuss LGBT-related topics under any circumstances.
The contradiction is what makes the report so striking.
Publicly, Putin has built much of his recent image around anti-Western politics, anti-NATO messaging and “traditional values.” Privately, according to the investigation, his alleged sons have been taught and cared for by people from the very countries his government regularly attacks.
One Irish-Canadian nanny was reportedly hired even after the Kremlin intensified its attacks on the “collective West” following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
As recently as January 2026, three foreign nannies were reportedly still employed for the boys. One South African nanny named Carol allegedly resigned earlier this month without giving a reason.
Another former employee told Systema she never knew exactly who she was working for.
“I was simply a person receiving commands and orders,” she said.
The Kremlin has not publicly confirmed the children, the reported staffing arrangements or the details of the Systema investigation.
