Three people, including a child, have died after falling from a high-rise apartment building in London, authorities said.
The heartbreaking incident happened Wednesday, May 27, shortly before 7:30 a.m. local time on Churchyard Row in Elephant and Castle, a neighborhood in south London.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that emergency crews were called to the scene after reports that multiple people had fallen from a great height.
When first responders arrived, they found a woman, a man and a child at the scene.
Emergency crews tried to save them, but all three were pronounced dead.
The London Ambulance Service said its first paramedic arrived in about four minutes. The agency sent multiple resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, a paramedic in a fast response car, an incident response officer and paramedics from the hazardous area response team.
A trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance was also dispatched by car.
“Very sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, three people were pronounced dead [at] the scene,” a London Ambulance Service spokesperson said.
Police said the deaths are being treated as unexpected. No other injuries were reported.
The victims’ next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Authorities have not released the names or ages of the people who died.
Detectives are now asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to contact the Metropolitan Police.
The tragedy has left the south London neighborhood shaken as investigators work to determine exactly what happened inside the high-rise building before the fatal fall.
