A 24-year-old auto technician was killed in a horrifying workplace accident after a customer’s vehicle came off a lift at a Florida tire shop, authorities said.
The deadly incident happened Tuesday morning, June 9, at Atlantic Tire, located at 705 Southeast Monterey Road in Stuart.
According to the Stuart Police Department, officers responded to the shop after receiving a report about the incident. When they arrived, they learned that a customer’s vehicle had come off a lift and killed a 24-year-old technician.
Martin County Fire Rescue said its extrication team was called to the scene just after 6:30 a.m. for a fatal incident at the business.
When rescue crews arrived, they found an adult man pinned between a vehicle and a concrete wall inside one of the mechanic bays. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have not released the technician’s name.
Stuart police detectives responded to the shop and later left the scene, but officials said the investigation remains ongoing. The operator of the vehicle is cooperating with authorities, police said.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also involved. A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Labor told WPBF that OSHA has opened an investigation into the fatal incident.
“Our sincere condolences go out to the technician’s family, friends, and coworkers during this incredibly difficult time,” the Stuart Police Department said in a statement.
The city of Stuart Fire Rescue and Police departments are leading the investigation, according to Martin County Fire Rescue.
