A suspected shoplifter was killed and two San Francisco police officers were injured after a theft call at Trader Joe’s turned into a chaotic foot chase that ended with all three being struck by a passing car.
The incident happened shortly after 7:30 a.m. Friday near the Trader Joe’s at California and Hyde streets, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
Police said officers were responding to a reported theft at the grocery store when they tried to detain the suspect. The person allegedly resisted and ran from officers, leading two cops on a foot chase into the street.
Moments later, a passing car hit the suspect and both officers.
Video from the scene showed the frightening aftermath, with the suspect and officers scattered in the roadway. One clip appeared to show a person pinned beneath the front of a gray vehicle as bystanders and police gathered nearby.
Another video reportedly showed officers trying to take the suspect down just before the car plowed into them. The driver appeared unaware of the struggle unfolding in the street.

The suspect and both officers were rushed to the hospital. Police said the suspect later died from his injuries.
The two officers suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening. They were identified by the San Francisco Standard as a recruit officer and a field training officer.
San Francisco police spokesperson Robert Rueca said the department was saddened by the deadly outcome.
“We’re deeply saddened by the death of the suspect, and we are hoping that the two officers recover fully from this incident,” Rueca told reporters at the scene.
