Five women were injured after two suspects on a moped allegedly threw sulfuric acid at them in a disturbing drive-by attack in Jersey City.

The attack happened Monday night on Wilkinson Avenue, where the women were inside a vehicle when two people rode past on a moped and allegedly hurled the corrosive liquid at them.

Authorities believe the attack was targeted and may be connected to an earlier dispute, according to officials and local reports.

All five women were rushed to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. They suffered burns and peeling skin from the chemical substance, according to WABC.

The victims have not been publicly identified.

Officials said each of the women is in stable condition.

Jersey City Mayor James Solomon condemned the attack in a statement, calling it “horrific.”

“My thoughts are with those hurt in this horrific attack, and I want our communities to know that violence like this has absolutely no place on our streets,” Solomon wrote on Facebook.

The mayor said he directed the Jersey City Police Department to use its full resources to investigate the attack.

“I have directed JCPD to use its full resources on the investigation, and to ensure that our officers work around the clock to find those responsible and bring them to justice,” he added.

No arrests have been announced.

The investigation remains ongoing as police search for the suspects behind the frightening chemical attack.
