Three children were killed after a boat carrying 10 people capsized during a powerful storm on Geneva Lake in Wisconsin, according to local reports.

The tragedy unfolded Friday when severe weather suddenly moved across the lake, causing the vessel to overturn in the water.

A source familiar with the incident told CBS News Chicago that the three victims were children believed to be younger than 13.

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a boat capsized during the storm and said a large search-and-rescue operation was launched.

Seven people were pulled from the water alive, while three others were found dead.

Authorities have not officially released the victims’ names and have not provided details about how they died.

Officials said that, to the best of their knowledge, 10 people were aboard the boat when it flipped.

The circumstances surrounding the deadly accident remain under investigation by the Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

No additional information about the survivors, their conditions or what type of boat was involved was immediately available.
