A 23-year-old woman was killed in a horrifying accident in central Japan after a man plunged from a 12-story apartment building and landed on her as she walked along the sidewalk below.

The deadly incident happened at around 1 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, in Nagoya’s busy Sakae district, according to several Japanese news outlets, including Kyodo News, Japan Today and The Mainichi.

Authorities identified the victim as Houra Inaba, 23. The man who fell from the building was identified as 29-year-old Shinsei Taguchi.

Both were rushed to a hospital after the impact.

Inaba suffered catastrophic injuries and was pronounced dead at around 5:30 a.m. from hemorrhagic shock, a life-threatening condition caused by severe blood loss.

Taguchi survived the fall but remained unconscious and in critical condition, according to reports.

Investigators have not yet determined whether Taguchi deliberately jumped from the building or fell accidentally. Authorities also have not confirmed which floor he fell from.

A woman who identified herself as Inaba’s friend reported the incident to police, according to Japan Today and The Mainichi.

Footage recorded after the tragedy showed police blocking off part of the sidewalk with tape and traffic cones as officers investigated the scene. Another haunting image showed a single high-heeled shoe lying on the pavement.

The incident took place near the downtown loop of the Nagoya Expressway in an area that is typically crowded with pedestrians.

Kyodo News described the neighborhood as a busy district filled with stores and entertainment venues, while The Mainichi reported that the area is packed with office and apartment buildings.

Police with the Aichi Prefectural Police Headquarters are continuing to investigate exactly how Taguchi fell and the circumstances leading up to the fatal collision.
