A Saturday evening outdoor concert in downtown Lexington, Kentucky, turned deadly when gunfire erupted, leaving one person dead and four others wounded, including two children.

The shooting happened around 6:45 p.m. at Charles Young Park, where a music event was underway.

Authorities said five people were shot in total.

Four of the victims survived and were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. Among those wounded were a 14-year-old and a 4-year-old, along with two adults.

One other victim was killed.

The violence unfolded just over a mile from the Hyatt Regency, where Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear was speaking at the Kentucky Democratic Party’s Moving Forward Together dinner.

Beshear interrupted his remarks to acknowledge what had happened nearby.

“Before I continue, I do need to let y’all know we do have some tough news tonight,” he told the crowd.

He said the shooting had taken place about a mile and a half away and appeared to have happened after the dinner had already begun.

“We have five people that I think received injuries and probably have one deceased,” Beshear said.

Lexington police remained at the scene for hours as investigators worked to determine what led to the shooting.

As of around 10 p.m., authorities said the investigation was still active and that no additional information was immediately available.

Police Chief Lawrence Weathers also urged members of the public to speak up if they know someone who may be at risk of committing violence.

“If you know somebody who might be inclined to use a weapon, please do anything you can do to let us know before something happens,” Weathers said.

Authorities had not publicly identified the person who died or the surviving victims.

No information about a suspect or possible motive was immediately released.

The Lexington violence came during an especially deadly stretch, with other shootings also reported Saturday in Michigan, Virginia and Chicago.
