American cyclist Ezra Caudell remains hospitalized after suffering serious injuries in a crash during Sunday’s Philadelphia Cycling Classic.
The 19-year-old Modern Adventure Pro Cycling rider was involved in a collision with Belgian cyclist Milan Menten of Lotto-Intermarché early in the men’s race.
Caudell was knocked unconscious in the crash, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Both riders were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Two days later, Caudell’s team released an update saying he was still receiving care for serious injuries.
“Ezra remains hospitalized and is actively receiving care for multi-system trauma he sustained as a result of his crash at the Philadelphia Cycling Classic,” Modern Adventure said Tuesday.
The team added that Caudell has a strong medical team caring for him and that his family remains by his side.
“We are grateful for the thoughts and ongoing outpouring of support,” the statement said.
No additional details were released about the exact nature of his injuries or his expected recovery.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker also addressed the crash following Sunday’s race, saying city officials were monitoring the condition of two cyclists who required hospital care.
Parker praised first responders, including the city’s fire department and on-site medical teams, for reacting quickly.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with both cyclists, their families and teams,” she said.
Lotto-Intermarché has not publicly released further details about Menten’s condition.
Caudell is considered one of the most promising young road cyclists in the United States.
The Georgia native finished fourth in the under-23 road race at the U.S. national championships in June.
The following day, he competed against some of the country’s top professionals and finished seventh in the elite men’s road race.
Caudell has also spent part of this season gaining valuable experience in Europe.
In April, he became the youngest rider in the field at the prestigious Paris-Roubaix race, finishing 121st in his debut.
He has also competed in the Arctic Race of Norway and the Tour of Denmark.
Caudell rides for Modern Adventure Pro Cycling, an American team founded by former Tour de France stage winner George Hincapie.
His teammate Ben Oliver finished seventh in Sunday’s Philadelphia race.
The Philadelphia Cycling Classic returned last weekend after a 10-year absence, reviving one of the most recognizable cycling events in the United States.
The course took riders through central Philadelphia, along the Schuylkill River and up the traditional climb through Manayunk.
For Caudell and his family, however, the focus now remains on his recovery following the frightening crash.
