A newlywed groom has died and his pregnant wife remains missing after their small fishing boat collided with a water taxi in Venice, Italy.

Sean Michieli, 25, died Saturday, just three months after marrying 26-year-old Gabriela Querino.

The couple had been out on the Venetian Lagoon looking for bait when their small boat collided with a water taxi.

The impact threw both Michieli and Querino into the water and caused their boat to sink.

Michieli was pulled from the lagoon with serious injuries, but he later died.

The tragedy has an even more heartbreaking family connection. Michieli’s uncle, Endrius, reportedly died in a similar boating accident nine years earlier.

Querino, who moved to Italy two years ago, has not been found.

She was pregnant with the couple’s first child.

Search efforts have continued, but rescuers have been dealing with difficult conditions, including muddy water and high tides.

Querino’s mother, Gisele Elorriaga, said she is desperately hoping her daughter is found alive.

“I just want my daughter back alive,” she told Brazilian outlet Globo.

Authorities have not yet determined exactly what caused the collision.

Investigators are reportedly looking at darkness and fog as possible factors.

Venice prosecutors have opened a nautical homicide investigation as they work to determine what happened.

Luca Zaia, president of the Regional Council of Veneto, called the crash “an immense tragedy for a family that was just beginning to build their future.”

The couple had been married for only three months before the accident.
