A 37-year-old woman was seriously injured after being attacked by a shark while swimming off the coast of the Bahamas during a dolphin excursion.
The woman, who is from Austria, was in the water about 3.5 miles off the coast of Bimini Island when the shark attacked, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
Authorities said she suffered serious injuries to her right ankle.
Following the attack, the woman was brought to the Bimini Community Clinic shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 14.
Because of the severity of her injuries, she was later airlifted to New Providence, the most populous island in the Bahamas, for additional medical treatment.
Police said the attack happened while the woman was swimming as part of a dolphin excursion.
Officials have not released additional details about the shark involved or exactly how the attack unfolded.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
