A 66-year-old mother of eight was killed in a horrifying brown bear attack after the animal allegedly reached through her bedroom window and dragged her from her home in Siberia.
Lyudmila Prokofievna was sleeping inside a house in the village of Verkhniy Kebezh in Russia’s Krasnoyarsk region when the bear attacked, according to local reports.
A friend was reportedly sleeping in the same room but did not realize what was happening until it was too late.
Investigators later found claw marks on the outside of the house.
Prokofievna’s body was discovered roughly 50 feet from the home.
The bear reportedly returned to the area the following day and was tracked down and killed by hunters.
The deadly attack is one of several recent bear incidents reported across Siberia during what local outlets have described as an unusually dangerous season.
In another case in the Irkutsk region, three men were attacked while picking berries in the forest.
Two of the men, identified in reports as Gennady T., 65, and Konstantin P., 55, were killed.
A third man, a 59-year-old forester named Alexander P., managed to escape and call for help.
He later said he attempted to return to help the other men but saw two bears standing on their hind legs and growling in his direction.
Authorities and hunters later located the victims.
Police reportedly opened fire on an aggressive bear encountered in the area, but the animal escaped into the forest.
Other recent attacks have also drawn attention.
In Krasnoyarsk earlier this month, two women who went mushroom picking were found dead in the woods with injuries consistent with a bear attack.
Authorities said Galina Teterina, 73, and another woman identified as Zoya G., 67, had disappeared near the village of Podtyosovo before their bodies were found several miles from the community.
Separate reports said the women were found only a short distance from each other and that their bodies had been partially covered by the animal.
Another recent case involved 29-year-old Snezhana Korolyova, who was killed by a brown bear while camping with her fiancé near Lake Teletskoye in Russia’s Altai Republic.
Reports said the bear attacked the couple’s tent in the early morning hours and dragged Korolyova away.
She had reportedly become engaged just one day earlier.
The string of attacks has heightened concern in parts of Siberia where bears have increasingly been reported near villages, campsites and other populated areas.
Authorities have not announced any connection between the individual incidents, but residents have been urged to exercise extra caution in areas where bears are active.
