A 24-year-old Utah man who was eagerly counting down the days until becoming a father has been killed in a devastating construction accident, leaving his nine-months-pregnant wife preparing to welcome their baby girl without him.
Truman Yardley died Tuesday, October 27, after being struck and pinned by a dump truck at a construction site near Cedar City, Utah. The young husband had been working on a project he was especially proud of when the routine workday took a tragic turn.
Now, his wife, Lexi, is facing the unimaginable heartbreak of burying her husband just as the couple was preparing for one of the happiest moments of their lives.
The accident occurred around 10:20 a.m. at a construction site near Sonrise Christian Church, just west of Cedar City along Iron Springs Road.
According to the Iron County Sheriff’s Office, Yardley was bending down to grease the bucket of an excavator when a dump truck operated by another construction worker backed into him.
The vehicle struck and pinned the young man, causing fatal injuries before emergency responders could save him.
Authorities initially requested an Intermountain Life Flight helicopter, but the response was canceled after deputies arrived and determined that Yardley had died at the scene.
Investigators described the incident as a tragic accident, with no evidence suggesting that the truck driver intentionally struck his coworker.
The sheriff’s office has since concluded its investigation without filing criminal charges or issuing citations. However, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is conducting a separate investigation into the construction company.
For Yardley’s loved ones, the sudden loss has been especially devastating because of everything he was looking forward to.
He and Lexi had married in June 2025 and were expecting their first child, a daughter, in approximately two weeks.
In an emotional interview with KSL-TV, Lexi described her husband as an incredibly selfless man who worked tirelessly to provide for others and was always searching for ways to make people happy.
“He was just the most selfless man you’d ever met and always working hard,” she recalled.
Yardley had been serving as the foreman on the construction project where he died, a responsibility he had embraced with tremendous pride.
According to his wife, he was thrilled to oversee the work and had poured much of his energy into making the project a success.
But his greatest excitement came from the family he was building at home.
Lexi recalled the unforgettable moment the couple discovered they were expecting their first baby, news they received shortly before leaving on an anniversary vacation.
The two decided to keep the pregnancy a secret for a little while, enjoying a special cruise together before sharing the announcement with family and friends.
“We were just so excited,” she said. “He was just so excited to be a dad.”
Those happy memories have become particularly precious following his sudden death.
Lexi said her husband had shown her extraordinary love throughout their relationship and that she had been looking forward to watching him become a father.
“Nobody loved me more perfectly than he did,” she said. “He showed me exactly how I should be treated and how our daughter should be treated.”
Beyond his work in construction, Yardley was also a talented musician who loved performing and bringing people together.
He had been the lead singer of a band called Aquamarine and regularly helped with sound and lighting for SokHop, a popular weekly music and social event for college students in Cedar City.
Friends remembered his infectious enthusiasm, willingness to help others and ability to make people feel welcome.
His sister-in-law, Alyssa Yardley, described the special bond he shared with his brother Austin, saying the two always found ways to laugh together and make even ordinary moments entertaining.
Members of the local music community also shared emotional tributes, remembering Yardley as someone whose kindness and passion left a lasting impression.
As news of his death spread, friends, relatives and neighbors quickly rallied around Lexi, recognizing the enormous challenges facing a young widow about to give birth.
A family member launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses and support Lexi and her daughter as they begin navigating life without Truman.
The fundraiser explained that Yardley had been the family’s primary provider and that his wife would soon be welcoming their baby under circumstances neither could have imagined.
Community members have responded with donations and messages of encouragement, while Sonrise Christian Church has announced plans to collect a special offering to support the grieving family.
Iron County public information officer Cassie Meredith praised the community’s response, describing how residents have come together to help during an extraordinarily difficult time.
For Lexi, that generosity has offered a small measure of comfort amid overwhelming grief.
She said she was deeply grateful for the people supporting her and believed her husband would have been touched to see how many lives he had affected.
As the couple’s daughter’s arrival draws closer, Lexi is holding tightly to memories of the man who was so excited to meet her.
What should have been a joyful countdown to fatherhood has instead become a heartbreaking farewell, leaving a young mother preparing to raise her little girl with stories of the father who loved her before she was even born.
