A father and his 15-year-old son are fighting for their lives after two masked men stormed their family home in England and launched a violent knife attack in the middle of the night.
The terrifying home invasion left two family members critically injured, a mother hospitalized and three other children caught in the middle of a frightening ordeal.
Even more disturbing, police say the attack appears to have been completely unprovoked, leaving investigators searching for answers about why the family was targeted.
The violence erupted shortly before 12:30 a.m. Thursday, October 8, at a house in Thurnby, a quiet village near Leicester in central England, roughly 100 miles northwest of London.
According to Leicestershire Police, two masked men entered the property on Station Road, near its intersection with Somerby Road, and attacked several members of the family.
The father, a man in his 50s, suffered multiple stab wounds during the assault.
His 15-year-old son was also stabbed, leaving both victims with life-threatening injuries.
Emergency services received a call at approximately 12:26 a.m. reporting a violent disturbance inside the residence.
Because of the seriousness of the situation, police dispatched armed officers to the scene.
However, by the time officers arrived, the masked attackers had already fled.
Paramedics rushed the injured family members to the hospital, where doctors began treating their wounds.
As of Friday, October 9, the father and teenage son remained hospitalized in critical condition, with authorities describing their injuries as life-threatening.
The boy’s mother, a woman in her 40s, was also assaulted during the attack.
She suffered injuries to her hand and shoulder but was released from the hospital after receiving treatment.
Three other children were inside the home when the violence occurred.
Fortunately, police confirmed that none of those children suffered physical injuries.
Authorities have not revealed how the attackers entered the property, whether the family knew them or what may have triggered the violence.
Investigators have also not publicly identified a motive, making the circumstances surrounding the attack especially concerning.
Detective Inspector Lorna Granville, who is leading the investigation through the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, described the incident as an apparently unprovoked attack against an innocent family.
“This was a violent attack against a family in their own home which appears to have been completely unprovoked,” Granville said.
“Our investigation to understand what happened and why – and identify those behind such a horrific criminal act – is going to continue over the weekend.”
Police have launched an extensive investigation to identify the two masked men and determine what happened inside the residence.
Forensic investigators have been examining the property for evidence, while detectives are reviewing potential surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses in the surrounding neighborhood.
Officers have also secured the home to allow specialists to carry out a detailed examination.
Investigators are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who was near Station Road and Somerby Road between 11 p.m. Wednesday and the early hours of Thursday morning.
Police believe surveillance footage from nearby houses, security cameras and vehicles could provide valuable information about the attackers’ movements.
Residents with doorbell cameras or dashboard cameras have been encouraged to review their recordings for anything unusual, including suspicious vehicles or people walking through the neighborhood.
Granville emphasized that even seemingly minor details could help detectives piece together what happened.
“Anything you’re able to provide, no matter how insignificant you think it might be, could help us,” she said.
The detective also made clear that bringing the attackers to justice is a priority.
“We owe it to the victims to locate the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” Granville added.
The investigation has caused concern in Thurnby, a residential community outside Leicester that is generally known for its suburban homes and quiet streets.
Police have increased patrols around the neighborhood to reassure residents and encourage anyone with information to come forward.
The East Midlands Special Operations Unit, a specialized law enforcement division that investigates serious crimes across several counties in central England, is overseeing the investigation.
Detectives are examining several possible explanations for the attack, although authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or established whether the family was deliberately targeted.
They have also not confirmed whether the attack was connected to a robbery, a personal dispute or another motive.
For now, investigators are concentrating on identifying the masked men and gathering enough evidence to determine exactly what happened.
The incident also highlights the devastating consequences of violent attacks inside family homes, where victims have little warning and limited opportunity to escape.
In this case, the attack occurred while six family members were inside the residence, including four children.
While three of the children escaped physical injury, their father and teenage brother remain in the hospital with critical wounds.
Police have urged residents not to speculate about the circumstances of the attack while detectives work to establish the facts.
Anyone with relevant information can contact Leicestershire Police through its official reporting channels.
As of Friday, October 9, no arrests had been publicly announced in connection with the case.
