A 10-year-old girl was killed and seven other children were injured after a teenage girl allegedly disguised herself in another school’s uniform and launched a stabbing attack on students arriving for class in Istanbul, Turkey.

The horrifying incident unfolded Tuesday morning, October 6, at Şeyh Şamil Imam Hatip Middle School in the Başakşehir district of Istanbul, turning what should have been an ordinary school day into a tragedy that has devastated families and raised serious concerns about campus security.

Authorities say the suspected attacker, a 15-year-old girl who attended a different school, arrived wearing the middle school’s uniform and carrying a knife. She allegedly approached students gathered in the schoolyard before attacking several children between the ages of 10 and 13.

Eight students were wounded during the violence, including 10-year-old Eslem Sare Bulut, who was rushed to a nearby hospital with critical injuries. Despite doctors’ efforts to save her, Eslem died, leaving her family and school community struggling to comprehend the loss.

The seven surviving children were also hospitalized, with some suffering serious injuries. Their conditions varied, although officials later reported encouraging signs in the recovery of several victims.

According to Turkish authorities, the attack began around 8:40 a.m., as students were arriving for their morning classes. The suspected attacker had traveled from a nearby neighborhood and entered the grounds of a school she did not currently attend.

Investigators believe the teenager deliberately wore a uniform resembling those used by the school’s students, allowing her to blend in with children arriving for the day.

Education Minister Yusuf Tekin confirmed that the suspect attended a different high school and that officials were examining how she gained access to the property.

As the attack unfolded, school security personnel intervened and detained the teenager before handing her over to responding police officers.

Emergency services quickly arrived, transporting the injured children to local hospitals while authorities secured the school and began gathering evidence.

For parents, the news was terrifying. Families rushed to learn whether their children were safe, while others waited at hospitals for updates as doctors treated the injured students.

The tragedy became especially heartbreaking when officials confirmed that Eslem, one of the youngest victims, had died despite emergency medical treatment.

Her death prompted an outpouring of grief across Istanbul and in her family’s hometown in northern Turkey.

Although the suspect’s identity has not been released because she is a minor, Turkish authorities have identified her by the initials F.M.

Local reporting indicates that she previously attended the middle school where the attack occurred before transferring to a high school in another district.

That connection has become an important part of the investigation, although authorities have not established whether she had a personal dispute with any of the children involved.

Investigators are also examining the suspect’s activities leading up to the attack. Turkish media reported that materials recovered during the investigation may indicate she had researched previous school attacks in other countries.

Those reports have not established a definitive motive, and officials have not publicly confirmed whether the suspect was attempting to imitate another incident.

As detectives worked to reconstruct what happened, the investigation expanded to include the teenager’s parents.

Police detained both her mother and father, raising questions about whether authorities believe the adults had knowledge of the alleged preparations or failed to take steps that could have prevented the violence.

On Wednesday, October 7, Turkish authorities confirmed that the suspected attacker and both parents had been formally arrested following court proceedings.

All three were ordered held while the criminal investigation continued.

The precise allegations against the parents have not been fully detailed in the available official reporting, and their detention does not establish that they knowingly participated in the attack.

The case has prompted considerable attention in Turkey, where officials are examining whether school security procedures were properly followed and whether warning signs may have been overlooked.

Following the attack, the Turkish Ministry of National Education issued a statement describing the violence as deeply disturbing and confirmed that both criminal and administrative investigations had been launched.

The ministry also announced that psychological support teams were being assigned to assist students, teachers and families affected by the tragedy.

Such assistance is particularly important following violent incidents involving children, as students who witness frightening events can experience anxiety, difficulty sleeping and fear about returning to school.

For those who knew Eslem, however, the immediate focus was on mourning the young girl whose life had been taken so suddenly.

On Wednesday, October 7, relatives and hundreds of mourners gathered in her family’s hometown in Turkey’s Bartın province for her funeral.

Her parents, Feyzullah and Şeyma Bulut, were joined by relatives, community members and government officials as prayers were offered for their daughter.

The emotional ceremony took place in the village of Konuklu, where Eslem’s coffin was carried through a crowd of mourners before she was laid to rest.

Photographs and video from the funeral showed a grieving community gathered to support the family, with many struggling to hold back tears.

Her death has become a painful symbol of the tragedy, which has left seven other families dealing with the physical and emotional aftermath of the attack.

The incident has also renewed discussions about how schools can protect students from threats involving individuals who are not authorized to be on campus.

Education officials are reviewing security arrangements and the circumstances that allowed the suspect to enter the school grounds.

School safety experts generally emphasize that preventing attacks requires more than controlling access to buildings. Effective measures can include identifying concerning behavior, encouraging students and families to report threats, and ensuring that school personnel know how to respond quickly during an emergency.

In Turkey, the Ministry of National Education oversees a vast public education system serving millions of children, making the questions raised by the Istanbul attack relevant to schools well beyond the affected community.

Authorities have not yet announced the full findings of their administrative investigation, and it remains unclear whether specific security failures will be identified.

Meanwhile, investigators continue examining witness statements, available surveillance footage and evidence recovered in connection with the alleged attack.

The suspect remains in custody, and because she is a juvenile, the legal proceedings are subject to protections that differ from those involving adult defendants.

The allegations against her have not been resolved in court.

For the families affected, the investigation represents an effort to understand how such a devastating event could occur at a place where children should feel safe.

Seven students are recovering from injuries, while the family of Eslem Sare Bulut faces a future without the little girl they expected to welcome home after school that Tuesday afternoon.
