Two young brothers were shot and killed in broad daylight on a Los Angeles street, allegedly by their own father, during what was supposed to be a routine custody visit.
The heartbreaking tragedy unfolded Sunday, October 11, in the city’s Pico-Union neighborhood, leaving a devastated mother mourning her two children and a community struggling to understand what happened.
The victims were identified as 4-year-old Jimmy Gramajo Bonilla and his 11-year-old brother, Osmani Gramajo Bonilla.
Their father, 35-year-old Adolfo Gramajo, is accused of shooting both boys before turning the gun on himself. He survived and was hospitalized under police custody.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire near Venice Boulevard and Catalina Street shortly before 1 p.m.
Emergency responders discovered three people suffering from gunshot wounds. All were transported to nearby hospitals, where the two children were pronounced dead.
Investigators believe Gramajo deliberately targeted his sons before attempting to take his own life.
Family members told NBC Los Angeles that Gramajo had been spending time with the boys during a custody visit and had taken them to McDonald’s before the shooting.
He had reportedly assured their mother that the children would be staying at his parents’ home.
Instead, the afternoon ended in an unimaginable tragedy.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that both boys died from gunshot wounds to the head and classified their deaths as homicides.
Gramajo was subsequently booked on a murder charge, according to reports citing Los Angeles police. His bail was reportedly set at $4 million.
Authorities have not established a motive for the killings.
As investigators worked to piece together the events leading up to the shooting, grieving relatives gathered near the intersection where the children lost their lives.
Flowers, candles and photographs were placed along the sidewalk, transforming the area into a memorial honoring the two brothers.
Their mother and extended family shared an emotional message on social media, remembering Jimmy and Osmani as affectionate, cheerful children whose smiles brought happiness to everyone around them.
The family described the boys as playful and full of life, with countless memories and dreams that will now remain unfulfilled.
Maria Lopez, an aunt of the children, remembered them as exceptionally sweet and well-behaved.
Family friend Carlos Aguilar also struggled to understand the violence, telling NBC Los Angeles that the boys had never hurt anyone and were always happy.
Relatives have launched a fundraiser to help cover funeral and burial expenses as they prepare to say goodbye to both children.
The deaths have shaken the predominantly Latino Pico-Union neighborhood, where residents have gathered to offer condolences and support to the grieving family.
Police continue investigating what led to the shooting, including the circumstances surrounding the father’s custody visit and the events immediately before the attack.
The tragedy also highlights the devastating consequences of violence involving children during family disputes, although authorities have not confirmed that a custody disagreement motivated this particular shooting.
For Jimmy and Osmani’s loved ones, the focus remains on remembering two little boys whose lives were taken far too soon.
