An 81-year-old Navy veteran and grandfather was killed after being struck by a stray bullet while leaving a Georgia Walmart, turning an ordinary shopping trip into a devastating tragedy for his family.
James Edward McDaniel, of Lula, Georgia, was in the parking lot of the Walmart on Shallowford Road in Gainesville on Wednesday evening, October 14, when gunfire erupted between several individuals.
Police say McDaniel had nothing to do with the confrontation and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The shooting occurred shortly after 7 p.m. as McDaniel was leaving the store on a mobility scooter and heading toward his vehicle.
According to investigators, a group of people began exchanging gunfire across the busy parking lot, where numerous shoppers and vehicles were present.
One of the bullets struck McDaniel, leaving him critically injured.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, and McDaniel was transported for medical treatment, but he did not survive.
Investigators later revealed another heartbreaking detail: McDaniel was approximately 130 yards away from the gunfire, more than the length of a football field.
Authorities believe he likely had no warning that he was in danger.
Gainesville Police Capt. Kevin Holbrook said the shooters had opened fire in an area crowded with innocent people, showing a reckless disregard for public safety.
The victim’s death has left his family struggling to understand how a routine trip to Walmart could end so violently.
McDaniel was a Vietnam War-era Navy veteran who achieved the rank of senior chief petty officer. After his military service, he spent 23 years working for the U.S. Postal Service before retiring.
His son, Ted McDaniel, remembered him as a hardworking father who devoted much of his life to serving his country and supporting his family.
McDaniel leaves behind his wife, Gloria, four children, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
His wife, who has dementia, is now facing the loss of the man who had been by her side for decades.
The couple had a long history together, marrying when they were young, later divorcing and eventually finding their way back to each other.
Gloria described her husband as a cheerful man who loved spending time with his family.
“He was a very happy person. And he wanted to be with his family,” she told WSB-TV.
She also recalled how her husband enjoyed caring for their horses and regularly handled shopping trips for the household.
His death has left her facing an uncertain future without her longtime companion.
Gainesville Police Chief Jay Parrish expressed his condolences, saying McDaniel was simply trying to go about his day and return home to the people who loved him.
“No words can adequately express the sorrow we feel for them,” Parrish said.
The chief condemned the reckless violence that claimed McDaniel’s life, emphasizing that innocent people should never have to fear becoming victims of gunfire while running everyday errands.
Following the shooting, police closed off the Walmart parking lot while investigators collected evidence from the scene.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation assisted local authorities with processing the extensive crime scene.
Walmart also issued a statement expressing concern for the safety of customers and employees and confirming that the company was cooperating with investigators.
As of October 17, police had not publicly announced any arrests or identified the individuals believed to have been involved in the gunfire.
Investigators are continuing to review evidence and interview witnesses to determine what sparked the shooting and who fired the fatal shot.
Authorities are urging anyone with information, including possible cellphone or dashcam footage from the area, to contact the Gainesville Police Department.
