A man was found dead inside a vehicle in the parking lot of a South Carolina Costco, prompting a large police response and leaving shoppers wondering what had happened outside the busy warehouse store.

The incident occurred Tuesday morning, October 20, at the Costco Wholesale location on Piney Grove Road in Columbia, near Exit 104 on Interstate 26.

According to the Columbia Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting and discovered a deceased man inside a parked vehicle.

Investigators subsequently determined that the death appeared to be a suicide.

Deputy Police Chief Melron Kelly confirmed that authorities found no evidence suggesting another person was involved and reassured the public that there was no ongoing danger.

The discovery brought numerous law enforcement vehicles to the shopping center as officers secured part of the parking lot and began examining the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

Police temporarily restricted access to the immediate area while investigators gathered evidence and coordinated with the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

Despite the emergency response, the Costco remained open, according to an employee who spoke with The State newspaper.

Authorities said there was no indication that the deceased man worked at the store or had been shopping there before the incident.

His name and age have not been publicly released as officials work to confirm his identity and notify his relatives.

Investigators have also not disclosed why the man was at the location or what circumstances preceded his death.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office is conducting a separate investigation to formally determine the cause and manner of death.

Police have emphasized that the incident was isolated and that customers, employees and nearby residents were not facing any continuing threat.

The unusual location of the tragedy drew attention because Costco stores are typically busy destinations for families and shoppers, particularly during daytime business hours.

However, officials have not reported any injuries to employees, customers or other people at the shopping center.

The case remains under review as authorities work to establish a timeline and notify the man’s family before releasing additional information.

For those who witnessed the emergency response, the incident was an unsettling reminder that a personal tragedy can unfold unexpectedly in an otherwise ordinary public setting.
