A Pennsylvania Walmart employee was shot and killed by a masked gunman just moments after finishing her shift, leaving behind a devastated family and a mystery that investigators are urgently trying to solve.
Latosha Ann Cooper, 45, was preparing to head home Wednesday night, October 21, when she was attacked in the parking lot of the Walmart where she had worked for years.
The shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. at the Cedarbrook Plaza Shopping Center on Easton Road in Cheltenham Township, just outside Philadelphia.
According to Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele and Cheltenham Police Chief Richard Schaffer, Cooper had completed her shift and was standing beside her vehicle when someone wearing a mask opened fire.
Police responded to the parking lot at approximately 11:24 p.m. and found Cooper suffering from gunshot wounds near a white Nissan.
Investigators also discovered a bullet hole in the rear door of the vehicle, an indication of the violence that unfolded as she was preparing to leave.
Cooper was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The killing has left her family searching for answers, particularly because it happened just two days after she celebrated her birthday on October 19.
Cooper was a mother of three and grandmother of three, making the sudden loss especially heartbreaking for the loved ones she leaves behind.
She was also a longtime Walmart employee who had reportedly worked at the store for approximately 22 years, most recently serving as a stocking coach.
For more than two decades, the store had been part of her daily routine. Wednesday night should have been no different.
Instead, investigators say her workday ended with a deadly confrontation just steps from her car.
Authorities have not identified the masked gunman or announced any arrests. The shooter’s motive also remains unknown, and police have not said whether Cooper was specifically targeted.
Those unanswered questions have added to the concern surrounding the attack, particularly because it occurred outside a busy retail store where employees regularly leave work late at night.
Detectives are now examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting and asking anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity to come forward.
An autopsy was scheduled as part of the homicide investigation.
Meanwhile, Walmart has expressed sympathy for Cooper’s family and coworkers, acknowledging the devastating impact of the killing on its employees.
“We’re heartbroken by what occurred outside our Wyncote, PA, store last night,” the company said in a statement.
Walmart also confirmed that it was cooperating with law enforcement and providing on-site mental health resources for employees struggling with the tragedy.
The store remained closed Friday, October 23, as the investigation continued.
The shooting has also renewed attention to safety concerns at the shopping center, which was the scene of another violent incident in 2018.
During that earlier episode, a gunman opened fire inside the Walmart, injuring five people. The attacker was later convicted and sentenced to prison.
Authorities have not suggested any connection between the two incidents.
For Cooper’s family, however, the immediate concern is finding the person responsible for taking the life of a mother and grandmother who was simply trying to return home after work.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the shooting, including possible witnesses or people who noticed unusual activity near the parking lot, to contact authorities.
Tips can be provided to Montgomery County Detectives at 610-278-3368 or Cheltenham Police at 215-885-1600, extension 499. Anonymous information can also be submitted through extension 777.
As the search for the gunman continues, Cooper’s loved ones are left mourning a woman who had just celebrated another birthday and was looking forward to returning home to her family.
