A California woman’s outrage over a botched coffee order allegedly turned violent when she hurled a cup of hot coffee at a Dutch Bros employee, sending the confrontation spiraling into a criminal investigation.
The disturbing incident unfolded October 14 at a Dutch Bros Coffee location in Fresno, where the customer became furious after discovering that her drink wasn’t what she had ordered.
But instead of accepting the employee’s offer to correct the mistake, authorities say the woman lashed out, throwing the hot beverage directly at the worker before fleeing the scene.
The entire confrontation was captured on surveillance video, which has since been released as investigators work to determine exactly what happened.
According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. at the coffee shop near the intersection of East Clinton and North Cedar avenues.
The woman had approached the shop’s walk-up window to collect her order when she realized something was wrong with her drink. A verbal disagreement followed, with the customer becoming increasingly upset as she confronted the employee about the mistake.
Investigators say the barista attempted to resolve the situation by offering to fix the order, but the customer’s frustration only intensified.
Moments later, the woman allegedly tossed the hot coffee onto the employee.
The surveillance footage shows the confrontation at the service window, providing authorities with evidence of the encounter that turned a routine customer complaint into an alleged battery.
After throwing the drink, the woman reportedly walked away from the business and climbed into a light-gray SUV before driving off.
Investigators initially believed the vehicle might have been a newer Hyundai Ioniq, noting that it displayed a temporary paper license plate on the front bumper.
The sheriff’s office released images and video of the encounter on October 28, asking the public to help identify the woman.
Authorities described the suspect as being approximately 30 years old, between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a medium build. She was wearing a white T-shirt, gray sweatpants and blue sneakers, with her hair pulled back into a ponytail.
But the case has since taken another turn.
According to subsequent reporting, investigators identified and contacted the woman, eliminating the need for the original public search. However, she was not immediately arrested.
Instead, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office forwarded a misdemeanor battery case to the district attorney’s office for review, leaving prosecutors to decide whether formal charges should be filed.
Authorities have not publicly released the woman’s identity or explained why she was not taken into custody.
The employee’s condition has also not been publicly detailed, and officials have not disclosed whether the hot coffee caused burns or required medical treatment.
Although the alleged assault lasted only moments, the incident has raised concerns about the treatment of employees in customer-facing jobs, particularly when minor disagreements escalate into physical confrontations.
For workers at busy coffee shops, incorrect orders are an ordinary part of the job, typically resolved by remaking a drink or offering a replacement.
In this case, however, investigators say an employee attempting to correct a simple mistake became the target of an angry customer.
The released footage provides a striking look at how quickly an everyday interaction can turn dangerous, with the alleged assault unfolding over something as routine as a cup of coffee.
The Fresno County District Attorney’s Office will now determine whether the evidence warrants criminal prosecution.
